In a bid to promote tourism in Dhanushkodi town here, which was destroyed in a devastating cyclone in 1964, road laying work between Mukuntharayar Chathiram to nearby Arichalmunai is nearing completion.
The remnants of the 'ghost town' would soon get a facelift. The district administration proposes to set up a sound and light show at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore, District Collector S Natarajan who visited Dhanushkodi today said.
The 9-km long road between Mukuntharayar Chathiram and Arichalmunai, which is being laid at a cost of Rs 54 crore, is expected to be inaugurated next month, the official said.
Soon a bypass road connecting Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi would also be laid at a cost of Rs 36 crore for the pilgrims' benefit, Natarajan said, adding several pilgrims visit the coastal town to take a dip in the sea, which is considered sacred.
The District Collector was accompanied by District Forest Officer Deepak and Superintendent of Police Manivannan.
