The All India Opthalmological Society (AIOS) is making serious efforts to ensure safe conduct of eye screening camps in a standardised manner, its newly elected president, Dr D Ramamurthy said here today.

Though thousands benefited from such camps, it was only the occasional outbreak of infections which attracted the public eye and often the eye doctor was solely held responsible, and violently beaten up, Ramamurthy told reporters here.

To avoid such incidents and prevent violence against the doctors, which was totally unacceptable, the society is in the process to set certain guideliens for the safe conduct of such camps, he added.

Similarly, AIOS was also in the process of setting up separate guidelines for establishing eye hospitals, so that they adhere to the norms during treatment, Ramamurthy, who was elected president of the society at the annual national conference held at Kolkatta a couple of days ago, said.

Stating that insurance coverage for eye treatments has to be further strengthened and optimized to enable more and more patients to benefit from modern technology, he said several drugs, which were used off label, has to be regularized.

There are more opportunities for upcoming ophthalmologists in tier-III cities and mofussil areas than the metro cities, he noted.

AIOS is also taking efforts to standardize fellowship training, with a detailed curriculum for every sub-speciality, claimed to be first of its kind in the world, he said.
