Operations to rescue a 4-year-old girl trapped inside a borewell at Nagathana village near here were stepped up today by several teams with no clue about her condition more than a day after she fell into it.

Teams from National Disaster Response Force, fire brigade, police and a robot expert were involved in the operation to rescue Akshata Hanamanth Patil, who fell into the borewell in a farm while she was following her father, a labourer, last evening.

About 10 earth movers were engaged in the operation to drill a parallel tunnel to the borewell to reach her, even as oxygen was being pumped to keep her alive with a team of doctors also at the spot, officials said.

Manaikandan, a robot expert from Tamil Nadu, who has developed a device to pull out trapped children, was also brought to Bangalore and flown in a helicopter along with district minister M B Patil, to join the rescue mission.

Manikandan pushed a camera inside the borewell to know the exact status of the trapped girl but the NDRF advised against proceeding further as there was be possibility of the child sliding further below, officials at the site said.

NDRF team suggested drilling a parallel tunnel to the borewell and creating a platform below 35 feet to prevent the girl from going down further, they said.

Patil and senior district officials were at the site supervising the operation, involving about 100 men.

Electricity problem had delayed the launch of rescue operation last night.
