An Egyptian labor lawyer and a journalist have been detained, raising rights activists' concerns that the military-led government is widening its crackdown to include non-Islamist critics of its policies.
Labor lawyer Haitham Mohammadain is in custody after a policeman accused him of belonging to a secret organization. His lawyer, Maha Youssef, today said that Mohammadain, a member of a revolutionary group critical of the military, has yet to be formally charged, a day after his arrest.
Separately, a military official said journalist Ahmed Abu-Draa, who reports from the Sinai Peninsula, is held pending military investigation for publishing wrong information about an ongoing security operation.
