An Egyptian terror group linked to the dreaded Islamic State militants has claimed responsibility for the killing of a 58-year-old American oil worker.

Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, which is active in the country's restive Sinai Peninsula, yesterday announced on its official twitter account that it killed William Henderson.

They also published pictures of his passport and two identification cards on the account.

The ID cards showed that Henderson was from Texas and worked for Texas-based energy company Apache Corp. And Qarun Petroleum Co, a joint venture with Egypt.

The company said in August that one of its supervisors had been killed while driving his car in Egypt's Western Desert. They, however, did not identify the man.

However, official sources said that Henderson's body was found with another foreigner, whose nationality was not identified, in a car on the road outside Cairo.
