Eid celebrated across Tripura with religious fervour

Eid ul-Adha was celebrated across Tripura today in an atmosphere of communal harmony, officials said today.

People from the Muslim community participated in the morning prayer in different mosques of the state including the acclaimed Gedumia Masjid, state Wakf Board president Baharul Islam Majumder said.

"Many cattle and cow markets were organized at Sonamura before the Eid and the BJP workers set up camps there and distributed cold water to the buyers and sellers in the scorching heat, Majumder, who is also the state committee member of BJP said.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb extended his best wishes to the people in the state on the occasion.

 

Eid ul-Adha is also known as the festival of sacrifice or Bakrid and Eid ul-Azha.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sonamura in Sipahijala district, Saju Vayid said the prisoners at Sonamura district jail had performed namaz in the morning in which he also took part.

Jailer of the district jail at Kailashahar in Unakoti district, Prasenjit Das said the prisoners in his jail also performed namaz in the morning.

According to the 2011 census, Tripura has 8.6 per cent Muslims most of whom are in Sonamura subdivision of Sipahijala district and Kailashahar subdivision of Unakoti district.

Vice-president of Tripura unit of BJP, Subal Bhowmick said an atmosphere of communal harmony prevailed in the state.

I am also invited in Eid and like every year I would go to my Muslim friends house. It is a tradition that Hindus join Eid and Muslims join Durgapuja celebrations in the state, he told PTI.
