Muslims in Kerala today celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the culmination of the holy fasting month of Ramzan.

While the festival would be celebrated in other parts of the country tomorrow, Eid was observed in the southern state today as the moon was sighted in Kozhikode district last evening.

People offered special prayers and 'namaz' at mosques and idgahs and gave alms to the needy to mark the auspicious occasion which symbolises peace and brotherhood.

Friends and family members gathered at homes and exchanged greetings.

Special charity programmes were organised by individuals and outfits across the state in which new clothes, food packets and gifts were distributed to the poor and needy.

Governor Justice P Sathasviam and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan were among the dignitaries who greeted Keralites on the occasion.

In his Eid message, Sathasivm wished that "may Id-ul-Fitr, through its unique message of self discipline, sacrifice and charity, brighten our lives with love, oneness and brotherhood.
