Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, was today celebrated across Kashmir with thousands of devotees thronging the Hazratbal Shrine which houses the relics of the prophet of Islam.

More than 20,000 devotees offered afternoon prayers at the Hazratbal Shrine today as part of the celebrations of Eid Milad-un-Nabi, officials said.

They said the holy relic of Prophet Muhammad was displayed by its custodian after the prayers.

The officials said many devotees from far flung areas of the Valley had arrived at the shrine last night in order to offer morning prayers.

The Muslim Auqaf Trust, which manages the affairs of the shrine, had made arrangements for these devotees.

Reports of celebrations were received from other parts of the Valley also. Last year a huge Milad procession was taken out through the city but this year no such event has been organised.
