Imams led the special prayers and explained the significance of Eid-ul-Zuha celebrated by Muslims worldwide to honour the willingness of prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his first-born son Ismail before God intervened to provide a ram.
After offering Eid prayers at the Rajdhani Masjid in Dispur, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, "Love and brotherhood is the main essence of all religions.
"Eid-ul-Zuha evokes the feeling of love, compassion and understanding. Let us reaffirm our resolve to further strengthen the spirit of brotherhood, unity and peace."
Gogoi said Rs 50 lakh would be provided for the construction of a library-cum-research centre and auditorium at Rajdhani Masjid.
Parliamentary Secretary Rekibuddin Ahmed also offered prayers at the mosque.
In Nagaon district, president of Nagaon Anjuman Eidgah and forest minister Rockybul Hussain greeted the people and said eight economically backward meritorious students of Nagaon town will be given scholarship from the poor fund of Eidgah committee.
Eid prayers were also peacefully offered in the sensitive Dhubri district where curfew was lifted for 12 hours on the occasion of Eid.
