Rough seas and stiff winds are hampering the rescue work, the officials said, adding the fishermen, who are stranded since last night, would be brought back as soon as the weather conditions improved.

The officials said the Coast Guard and Sri Lankan officials had been intimated about the fishermen's plight.

Katchatheevu was ceded to Lanka by India in the 1970's.

Meanwhile, an abandoned mechanised boat was found near the Ramar Padam temple at Dhanushkodi.

The boat bore an Andhra Pradesh registration number and was from Kakinada in that state, police said.
