Jhabua district administration has asked eight chemical manufacturing units in Meghnagar industrial area to stop production for two weeks in the wake of complaints regarding water pollution being caused by them.

Collector in-charge Anurag Choudhary yesterday issued the orders, which states that production in the eight plants is to be stopped for next 14 days.

The orders comes following complaints that the effluents discharged by these units were adversely affecting the health of residents and damaging the aquatic life.

The main reason behind the order, as cited by Choudhary, is that pollution was making it difficult for the residents to drink clean water.

"Besides, these effluents were also having bad effect on the health of human beings and their domestic animals too were getting killed because of it," the order stated.

A case was also registered against these units in the collector's court, which has directed them to submit detailed plan for safe disposal of waste from their factories.

Hearing in the matter would take place on May 20.
