An elderly man was allegedly killed in firing at Niloha village in the district, police said today.

The incident took place last night, when a 65-year-old man belonging to one community was allegedly attacked by members of another community, Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar said.

Kumar denied reports of six persons reported to be injured along with incidents of stone pelting on buses.

Efforts are on to nab the accused, he said, adding that patrolling has been increased in the area.

The situation here is absolutely calm and in order to curb anti-social elements from indulging in rumour mongering, police has been deployed in plain clothes, he added.

Meanwhile, in the wake of recent clashes in Muzaffarnagar district between members of two communinities, the city administration here has closed the Delhi-Dehradun highway NH-58 as precautionary measure, zonal commissioner Ranjit Singh said.

The vehicles going to Muzaffarnagar have been routed via Baagpat, he said.
