The 68-year-old Phulrenu Chaudhury was alone in her flat last night when the dacoits broke the lock and grill and killed her when she resisted them, the sources said.

The dacoits took away a gold chain and a bangle, they said.

A pair of slippers was found in the room where the elderly woman's body was lying in a pool of blood.

A sniffer dog was brought to provide a lead. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh visited the spot.
