Elderly woman hit by bullet in clash in West Bengal

A 70-year-old woman suffered bullet injury during a clash over a football match at Gayeshpur in West Bengal's Nadia district in which bombs and firearms were used, police said today.

Police said the woman had come out of her home when the clash erupted last night at around 10.30 pm and was hit in her right thigh, the police said adding she was rushed to Kalyani JN hospital for treatment.

The football match was part of a day-night tournament being held at Nagendrabala High School in which 16 teams had participated. The clash, which had begun as a hot exchange of words, had occurred between a local team and a visiting team.
 

Police and local authorities said there was no permission to hold the tournament.

Patrolling is on in the area and the situation is under control, police said.
