An elderly woman died and her husband was injured after the scooter they were travelling by was allegedly hit by a bus in southeast Delhi's Nehru Place area today.

The deceased has been identified as Chandra Kochar (60), police said.

She was travelling pillion on a scooter with her husband, Ashok Kumar, around 10 AM when the bus hit their scooter and the couple fell down, following which the errant driver left the vehicle and fled, a police official said.

It was a school bus which was pressed into service as a public vehicle for the fortnight in view of the odd-even scheme in the city, said the official.

The bus hit the scooter while the latter was taking a U-turn. The couple was rushed to a hospital, where the woman was declared brought dead, and the bus was impounded, the official said.

A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered and efforts are on to nab the driver, said the official.

Kochhar was an accountant at a central government office. She lived with her family at southwest Delhi's Kalkaji area, the official added.
