A 67-year-old woman was trampled to death by a tusker near Alanthuirai on the city outskirts in the wee hours today, police said.
Subbathal had gone to answer nature's call behind her house in Semmai, about 30 KMs from here, when the elephant with a single tusk attacked her.
Hearing her screams, her husband and neighbours came out and managed to scare away the jumbo, but could not save the woman, who died on the spot, they said.
