Election officials from Meghalaya and Assam will meet here tomorrow for the crucial coordination meeting of the two states ahead of the Lok Sabha elections slated for April 9 and 7 respectively, Meghalaya Chief Election Officer P Naik said.

"The coordination meeting with our counterparts from Assam will be held tomorrow to discuss on coordination issues ahead of the elections," Naik told reporters here.

The issues mainly concern the security of both election officials and voters along the inter-state border.

Elections in the two constituencies in Meghalaya will be held on April 9 while in Assam, the first phase would begin on April 7.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya government has issued directives to para military forces deployed in the militant-hit Garo Hills region to be extra careful with their weapons lest they be snatched by militants.

"Security forces deployed on the ground in militant-hit Garo hills region were asked to remain alert and watchful of their weapons as they are liable to be snatched by militants," Home department Principal Secretary K S Kropha said.

Acting chief secretary P B O Warjri, who reviewed the meeting on security deployment and attended by Chief Election Officer P Naik last week, issued the directive, he said.

Meghalaya has a total of 2562 polling stations. While 1633 are in Shillong parliamentary constituency, 929 are for Tura constituency.
