Electioneering begun in three districts in Meghalaya for the December 13 by-poll to the seven tribal autonomous district councils even as the election code of conduct came into effect from today, officials said.

The by-poll was necessitated after seven legislators resigned from the membership to the two Autonomous District Councils last year following the state government passing a law preventing them to hold two elected offices.

"The model code of conduct has come into effect from today where the filing of nominations has also been opened," a senior official of the district council affairs department told PTI.

He said the code of conduct was necessitated to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of the elections to the vacant seats.

Six vacant constituencies are in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council while one is in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.

Over 1.46 voters in the KHADC are eligible to cast their votes to decide who they should elect as members to the tribal council.

Meanwhile, the returning officer of three constituencies in East Khasi Hills district has issued clear instructions not to carry over Rs 50,000 in cash to stop role of cash in the upcoming elections.
