An elephant was beheaded and its tusks were stolen by suspected poachers from neighbouring Assam at Buxa reserve forest in Jalpaiguri district, officials said today.

"The carcass of the elephant without its tusks was found on Saturday at Dakshin Raidak area in the forest and it is the handiwork of poachers coming from Assam," Chief Wildlife Warden Nabin Chandra Bahuguna told reporters here.

The "special" types of bullets with which it was shot and the interrogation of two persons arrested from Khowardanga later gave proof that the poachers came from Assam, he said.
