An elephant calf died at a rescue centre at Kapilas in Odisha's Dhenkanal district on Friday, six months after it was rescued from a forest, an official said.

The 10-month-old calf, which had been rescued from Chhendipada in Angul, was under observation at the centre, Kapilas Forest Ranger Darsania Bhoi said.

The reason behind the death is yet to be ascertained, he said, adding, the calf was sick for the last few days.

Three days ago, another ailing elephant calf, rescued from Hindon forest sub-division area, had died during treatment for an infection.
