The carcass of a female elephant was found in the area of Mandabari slums in Alipurduar district today, forest officials said.

According to a senior forest official, locals in the slum belt located in the Dooars foothills came across the carcass of the full-grown pachyderm this morning.

The site is close to Chilapata jungle, an elephant habitat in the Dooars area.

Prima facie the elephant appears to have been killed after coming into contact with a live wire while passing through the paddy fields, the official said, adding, however, that the exact reason could only be ascertained following an autopsy.
