The carcass of a mature pregnant elephant was found near the factory of Tulispara tea garden in West Bengal's Alipurduar district today.

The carcass was sighted by tea workers when they reported for work this morning.

The forest department was informed and forest personnel took away the carcass post mortem.

A forest department official said it was being primarily suspected that the elephant died of electric shock from live wire left in the area to stop pachyderms from plundering and devouring the vegetable gardens nearby.

Using such live wire to protect crops is common in the tea gardens, he added.
