The elephant was keeping unwell for the past few days, forest department sources said, adding that it was killed last night allegedly by poachers who inflicted multiple injuries and bludgeoned its head.

District Forest Officer Bidyut Sarkar claimed that the incident was the first of its kind in north Bengal and investigation would be conducted into it.

Conservationists in the area have demanded a CID probe in the killing of the pachyderm.
