Elephant dies of dysentry in Mudumalai camp

: A nine-year old male elephant died at a camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Nilgiris district today, reportedly after suffering from dysentry.

The pachyderm, one of three brought to the camp in 2013 after found destroying human habitations and crops in Thirunavannamalai and nearby areas, suddenly developed dysentery early today and died this afternoon, they said.

Another one of the elephants, a 26-year-old female had died in a similar manner last month.

The exact cause of death of both elephants would be known after postmortem, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the body of a male elephant calf was found in Varamalai area of Kothamandi North beat in Sirumugai range in Coimbatore district today.
 

The sources said the administration had taken steps to administer anti-Anthrax vaccine to cattle in and around Madukkarai range on the outskirts, following deaths of another two elephants suffering from the disease.
