An elephant ran amok after goring its mahout to death even as three horrified Chinese tourists, a couple and their three-year-old son, clung on to its back in

Northern Thailand today.

The three tourists were trapped while riding on the back of the male elephant for over three hours before being rescued by another mahout who managed to calm the elephant down and rode it back to the stand.

Witnesses said the 30-year-old elephant Plai Somjai became agitated and shook its head wildly throwing off its mahout who was then gored to death by the beast as it ran freely along a river in Chiang Mai province's Mae Wang district.

The tourists were reported to be shaken but unhurt.
