An elephant calf was killed when a tree apparently fell on it in Totapara jungle under Moraghat forest range in Jalpaiguri district, forest officials said today.

The carcass of the one-and-half year old calf was found yesterday by forest guards in Dooars area, they said.

The officials said a herd of 25 elephants had recently entered Moraghat forest range from nearby Reti forest. The baby elephant could be a part of the herd.

The exact cause of the death would be known after post-mortem, they said.
