A student of class X was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants when the animals strayed into human inhabited areas of Bamundanga tea gardens in Jalpaiguri district, officials said today.
Officials of Diana Forest Range said 16-year-old Uttam Oraon died on the spot last night when an elephant of the herd attacked him.
Protesting the incident, angry tea garden workers blocked road and stopped forest officials from visiting the area and demanded compensation and adequate measures to prevent wild animals from straying into human habitations, they said.
Recently, a leopard entered into the area from nearby forests and mauled a person.
