A 25-year-old mahout was killed by an elephant at the Panachamudu Badhrakali Amman temple here after a festival, police said.

They said Shamir was preparing to take the pachyderm back to Thrissur in Kerala from where it was bought when it suddenly picked him up with it's trunk and flung him to the ground.

Members of the public took him to a hospital, but he died without responding to treatment, police said.

Meanwhile, local people managed to bring the animal under control, police added.
