A man was trampled to death by an elephant while his wife had a narrow escape at a village in Odisha's Sundargarh district, police said today.

The rouge elephant attacked the couple outside their house at Sagjore village near Rajgangpur last night killing the man identified as Mahanandi Lakra, they said.

However, his wife managed to escape from the scene before the jumbo, believed to be roaming in the area after moving away from a herd, could turn its ire on her, police added.

Incidentally, there have been reports of elephant menace in these areas in the recent past.

Meanwhile, Forest Department officials held meetings in different villages in the area regarding the elephant menace and assured people of timely action to deal with the situation, officials said.
