A tribal woman was today trampled to death and her husband injured in an attack by an elephant at Somaijhopri on the outskirts of the steel city, police said.

The elephant attacked a house and killed 50-year-old Zema Bankira and wounded her husband Rajaram Bankira while they were sleeping on a cot in the wee hours, a police official said.

Rajaram was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was provided first aid.

Earlier the pachyderm, which entered the village from Rajnagar in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district, attacked the house of one Sukra Hembram and damaged it, he said.

Later, forest personnel and police along with villagers drove the elephant into a nearby jungle in a five hour long operation.

The villagers have demanded adequate compensation for the family of the victim, he said.
