A 70-year old farmer was trampled to death by an elephant at a village in Sathyamangalam forest division in the district in the wee hours today, police said.

Muniappan, who owned two acres of land in Makkampalayam forest settlement area, stayed in his field to protect the crop from wild animals.

Early this morning, an elephant entered the field and started damaging the crop. When Muniappan attempted to scare away the elephant, it retaliated and trampled him to death on the spot, police said.
