A youth has been trampled to death by an elephant in Top Slip area in the district, police said.
Eswaran (20), hailing from Amaravathi in nearby Tirupur district, had gone to visit his relative, working as a mahout to a 25-year-old elephant named Mariappan at the Top Slip Camp for elephants, yesterday.
As usual, the mahout had taken the tamed elephant for an evening stroll, with Eswaran joining them.
While returning, the elephant suddenly kicked and trampled Eswaran who was feeding it, police said.
Though the boy was taken to nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Forest department has ordered an inquiry into the incident, police said.
