Elephants go on rampage

A few huts were damaged and some food articles eaten away by a herd of elephants which strayed into Chinnathadagam village on the city outskirts in the wee hours today.

A tusker, from the herd of three, entered the farm of one C R Jayaprakash and damaged a hut, belonging to a worker, and removed rice and other food items with its trunk, around 1 AM, forest department sources said.

The inmates, a couple, had gone to their relative's place, much before the elephants entered their hut.

An eight-month pregnant woman, was rescued by fellow workers, after breaking open the rear wall and taken to safety, while a five-member family, including three kids, escaped through their tiled roof.
 

As the villagers gathered and raised their voice the herd lefty the place, the sources said.
