A herd of about 60 elephants strayed out from the Nambor Reserve Forest in neighbouring Karbi Anglong district and went on a rampage in the village trampling a 35-year old woman to death and seriously injuring four other persons.

Altogether 23 thatched houses were also damaged by the elephants who came in search of harvested paddy in the village, the sources said.

Environmentalists are of the opinion that elephants usually come out of the forest during winter months in search of paddy in villages.
