A 53-year-old man was today trampled to death by two elephants near here when he was irrigating his agricultural field, police said.

The elephants had entered the area last night and damaged crops, police said.

Angry villagers protested before Tumkur Deputy Commissioner K S Satyamurthy demanding government assistance. He assured the villagers compensation for the damaged crops.

The state government has announced Rs 5 lakh as ex-gratia for the family of the deceased, police said.

Satyamurthy said the administration will take steps to prevent elephants from entering the villages and added that forest officials were doing their best to chase the pachyderms back into the forest.
