Chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, actor Elijah Wood and other famous faces took to Twitter to voice their outrage after Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed the anti-gay law.

Bryant signed the "Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act" into law on April 5.

The bill will allow state employees to refuse to issue same-sex-marriage licenses and protect the rights of people with "deeply held religious beliefs", reported Ace Showbiz.

The Governor said that it would prevent "government from interfering with people of faith who are exercising their religious beliefs...In matters of marriage."

He added, "This bill does not create one action against any class or group of people. It doesn't create a new action or a new defense of an action against those people."

Ellen, 58, criticised this law on Twitter.

"The people of #NorthCarolina and #Mississippi deserve better. We won't stop fighting until they get it," she wrote.

Wood said, "What "religious beliefs and moral convictions" are being discriminated against in Mississippi?"

Lance Bass, said, "What the... @philbryantMS - seriously... No one is going to @VisitMS. #HB1523 was signed. Stupid."

Andy Cohen wrote, "@PhilBryantMS You are a disgrace to your religion, and the great state of Mississippi.
