The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, which manages the hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara, has decided to erect an emergency stairway exit adjacent to the right wall of the ancient second tower, a top official said today.

TTD Executive Officer Anil Kumar Singhal told reporters that the 'metallic' stairway is to be erected as a precautionary measure to avoid stampede like situations and other security emergencies.

TTD took the decision only after consulting the temple agama priests, he said, adding, the stairway would be used only during emergencies.

TTD public relations officer T. Ravi said the stairway is being built using stainless steel and steel.

The stairway's height and width would be around 22 feet and five feet respectively, he said, adding, work on erecting it would be completed in two or three days.
