Eminent social activist Sarojini Varadappan passes away

Noted social activist and Padma awardee, Sarojini Varadappan died here today following a brief illness.

Sarojini (92), daughter of former Chief Minister M Bhakthavachalam was a recipient of several honours including the Padma Shri and Padma Bushan, and had made a remarkable contribution in several areas, particularly in women welfare sector.

She has been the Sheriff of Chennai during the 1980's, besides heading the Women's Indian Association and the Indian Red Cross.

Credited with founding Women's Cooperatives in many villages and towns in Tamil Nadu, Sarojini has also worked as the president of the TN Social Welfare Board.

Governor K Rosaiah, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Union Minister G K Vasan, DMK president M Karunanidhi were among the leaders who have condoled the death.
 

Sarojini Varadappan was also the sister of Union Minister Jayanthi Natarajan's mother.
