Eminent writer Sankarshan Roy passes away

Eminent writer Sankarshan Roy has died at a private hospital here.

Roy, who was 88, is survived by his daughter and wife. He died last night and was cremated today at Nimtala Burning Ghat, family sources said.

A Geologist by profession, Roy used his pen to spread awareness on science relentlessly throughout his life.

A former Director of the Geological Survey of India, Roy had an experience and in-depth knowledge of the geological texture and the rocks of Chhotonagpur plateau as well as various other areas of the country which were enlivened by him in various science based short stories, novels and articles.
 

The book, 'Bhu Tatwiker Chokhe Bangla' (Bengal in the eyes of a Geologist) (written in Bengali) won him a major recognition.

The books (mostly written in Bengali) like Treasure Underground, Wild Life, Lost Mines, In the Forest of Chhotonagpur, The Earth, Nature and Man etc fetched many a laurel including Kishore Jnan Bijnan Award, Shishu Sahitya Parishad Puraskar, Ranajit Bal Memorial Award.

Roy, who retired from GSI in July 1986, also took part in various television and radio programmes in the last two decades.
