Sanjay Kothari, Special Secretary in the Ministry, today said, "We have already sanctioned 49 Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) in the country and 16 are under construction to help the youth (from economically weak sections) acquire skills so that they get employment and the tourism sector also develops. It becomes a win-win situation for both".
"The 'Hunar Se Rozgar Yojna' (employment through enhanced skills) has exceeded its target since its inception in 2009. We are now extending the scheme to the private sector for a wider sweep", Kothari said at a FICCI conclave on 'Furthering Quality Capacity Building in Tourism'.
He said the Ministry was now planning to rope in private players to provide training to youth in the hospitality sector.
Kothari also said the Tourism Ministry aimed to train 2.5 crore people to get jobs in the tourism sector during the 12th Plan period (2012-17).
"Training is a major tourist vehicle driver to ensure faster, inclusive and sustainable growth of the sector", he said.
The scheme offers training courses covering Food & Beverage Service (F&B) and Food Production and three more courses of housekeeping, bakery and a composite multi skilled course in F&B and service have been introduced.
The Tourism Ministry launched this special fully funded programme in 2009-10 for creation of employable skills amongst youth belonging to the economically weaker sections of society. This initiative was taken to bridge the gap of skilled manpower in the hospitality sector. (more)
