Over 50 employees at Sher-e-Kashmir Park and Sonawar areas of the city were detained after their four-day agitation with police using water cannons and batons, official sources said.
The protesting government employees made unsuccessful attempts to stage Secretariat 'gherao' over the past three days of their protest but all their attempts were scuttled by police, the sources said.
Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), which spearheads the employees agitation, called for a pen-down strike in the government offices for the day and a march to 'gherao' the Governor house to press for their demands, which include regularisation policy for daily wage workers, casual workers and need-based workers engaged after 1994.
The JCC is also asking for the removal of pay anomaly of clerical cadre, besides enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 and budgetary support for public sector undertakings.
Criticising the government for using force to sabotage their peaceful protest, a JCC spokesman said the employee leaders would meet on June 19 to chalk out future course of action.
