The government has decided to convert employment exchanges into "career centres" to provide counselling and other related assistance to job seekers, in collaboration with state governments, Rajya Sabha was informed today.
Replying to a question, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Vishnu Deo Sai said the placement of job seekers through the employment exchanges has been decreasing while the number of those getting registered has been on rise.
In 2010, 2011 and 2012, the number of people registered with the employment exchanges stood at 61.86, 62.06 and 97.22 lakhs, while placements effected were mere 5.10, 4.72 and 4.28 lakhs respectively, the minister said.
