The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to introduce English and Mathematics along with Hindi from Class I to improve learning standards in government schools, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today said.

Addressing a rally at Chadhiyar near Palampur, Singh said that such a step would go a long way towards raising the learning standards of students in government schools to bring them on a par with the students of public schools.

He said that education was his government's topmost priority and it had opened or upgraded 994 schools in the last three years besides starting 25 degree colleges in HP.

Most of the colleges have been opened in remote and far- flung areas to provide facilities for higher education to the rural youth, especially to girls near their homes.

He said that the government has also decided to fix responsibility among teachers for poor results and that would serve to ensure qualitative improvement in education.

Singh saidthat HP is a peaceful state where all sections of society live in harmony.

Although the state has a majority Hindu population, other minorities live here with the same dignity and rights, he said.
