England captain Charlotte Edwards today said it was not some super bowling by Australia but poor shot selection of her teammates which resulted in their narrow two-run defeat while chasing a paltry 148 in a Women cricket World Cup match, here today.
"We could have taken 147 any time against Australia, we should have knocked those runs off but it wasn't anything to do with the wicket. To be fair at times it wasn't great bowling so it was our poor shot selection at times," she told reporters.
Edwards said some the umpiring decision hurt them bad in the close game specially that of Laura Marsh as it turned the tide in the favour of Australia.
Marsh (22) had combined with Lydia Greenway (49) for a 55-run stand to take her side from 39/6 to 96 for seven. Marsh fell to a debatable leg before decision.
"Two poor decisions obviously did not help but there was some poor shot selection by middle order. It (Marsh dismissal) was definitely a turner. The turning point for me was the Marsh dismissal really. They built a really good partnership.
"Still at the end, Colvin and Shrubsole are probably the most calm people at the wicket. We were always really confident to be fair that they are capable of getting the runs, it just wasn't to be," she said.
To sum her team's performance today, she said, "We were disappointing with the bat but we have a great record coming into these events against them. It is disappointing that we couldn't go over the line today. "
Her counterpart Jodie Fields said,"We knew we had to bowl tidy overs and we knew if we bowled ine right areas, we could restrict that total." More
