Delhi Assembly Speaker MS Dhir today exhorted people in the city to plant saplings and then strive hard to protect the planted saplings to enable these to grow and expand the green cover in the national capital.
"Delhi is aspiring to expand its green cover everyday. It has trees, forests and green area over 20 per cent of its geographical sprawl. We need to enrich Delhi's green legacy," Dhir said at the launch of a tree plantation drive under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which was organised at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha premises at the Old Secretariat here.
Delhi government has developed 41 'city forests' to provide a safe abode for the vanishing birds.
Trees and forests play a significant role in mitigating the effects of climate change and global warming and sustaining the rich diversity of flora and fauna, which is vital for the survival of mankind, Dhir said.
