The Union Labour Ministry has asked the state governments to enrol unemployed youths under the 'Smart Card Scheme' which the Centre is planning to launch by January of next year.

"Smart cards will be provided to over 40 crore unorganised workers (across the country). We have asked the state governments to register the unemployed youths for the scheme," Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Bandaru Dattatreya, told reporters here.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would launch the Smart Card Scheme by January, 2016.

Stating that the ministry has undertaken steps to simplify 44 labour laws, he said that following simplification, the laws would be classified based on wages, social security and working conditions.

After visiting the Employees' State Insurance Corporation hospital here, he said the 214 dispensaries being run in the state would be converted to multi-specialty hospitals.
