The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi government and the civic bodies to ensure that the drains at a posh Southeast Delhi locality are properly cleaned and made obstruction-free.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar sought responses of the AAP government, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the Delhi Development Authority on the issue.

"We have heard the counsel appearing for the respective respondents. The counsel submit that they would place the matter before competent authority for issuance of appropriate directions in relation to cleaning of drains in Maharani Bagh in relation to which the complaint relates.

"Therefore, we dispose of this application with direction to all the three respondents to ensure that the drains at Maharani Bagh are cleaned without any further delay," the bench, also comprising Justice Jawad Rahim, said.

The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by NGO Senior Citizens Service Forum seeking immediate cleaning of drains at the Maharani Bagh area.

The plea had alleged that the authorities have turned a "blind eye" towards the pathetic conditions due to the dirty drains which have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
