The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to ensure that burning of leather and plastic is stopped in the scrap markets of Mundka and Tikri Kalan in West Delhi.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police, having jurisdiction over the area where the markets are located, to file a status report on the next date of hearing.
The bench also impleaded the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, North, as a respondent in the case.

"Counsel for the applicant submits that despite order of the High Court dated January 6, 2010, still different units are carrying on with the activity of burning leather and plastic, which is causing serious environmental hazards.
"In view of the above, we direct the Police Commissioner, NCT of Delhi to ensure that no leather and plastic burning is permitted in area of Mundka and Tikri Kalan," the bench said.
It fixed the matter for further hearing on April 29.
