Environmental conditions in Goa's tribal areas to be upgraded

The Goa government's environment department has proposed to take up various projects for upgradation of environmental conditions in tribal localities during the ongoing fiscal year.

The "Performance" Budget 2019-20 for Environment Department, placed in the assembly during the ongoing session, has said the upgradation of environmental conditions in tribal localities would be taken up under the Scheduled Tribe Development Scheme.

The performance budget document gives a summary of work done by a department in the previous fiscal and its plans for the current fiscal.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has tabled the performance budget for the department which speaks about its achievements during the last fiscal and projections for the current financial year.

 

The document said under the Scheduled Tribe Development Scheme, proper facility for solid waste treatment or disposal, sanitation, roads and infrastructure will be provided through deserving local bodies dominated by tribal people.

"Further, non-government organisations (NGOs), voluntary government organisations (VGOs) and institutions would be supported to undertake environmental-related awareness programmes in tribal areas," it stated.

The department has also decided to provide grants to local bodies for various projects for upgradation of environmental conditions in needy localities.

"Grant-in-aid will be released to village panchayats in tribal areas for setting up of an appropriate solid waste management facility, it added.

The budget document has mentioned that the department intends to create environmental awareness programmes and projects contributing to ecological conservation, restoration and adequate implementation of various environmental laws.

"Environmental awareness programmes for the benefit students and the community at large will be undertaken in collaboration with the Directorate of Education and other departments, institutions and deserving NGOs, it said.
