EPFO official, wife sentenced to 2 yrs RI

A CBI special court today sentenced a top Employees Provident Fund Organisation official and his wife to two years in jail for owning assets exceeding their legal income.

The anti-corruption court of Special CBI Judge S Jawahar also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on EPFO Enforcement Officer V Vasudevan and his wife Vasanthi for possessing wealth worth Rs 55.36 lakh between January 1, 1997 to July 3, 2008 acquired "by illegal means which is disproportionate to known sources of his income," a CBI release said.

The CBI had filed the charge sheet against the couple under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code.
 

"On completion of the trial, Vasudevan and Vasanthi were convicted and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment of two years each," it said.
